The back of the postcard reads:
Portrait of Rachel Donelson Jackson- by EarlThe HermitageNashville, TennesseeHome of President Andrew JacksonSeventh President of the United States
The postcard shows a portrait of Rachel Donelson Robards Jackson, wife to the 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson. Rachel Donelson was the daughter of the explorer and adventurer John Donelson, co-founder of Nashville, Tennessee and Rachel Stockley.
Ralph E. W. Earl, portraitist, was the son of Connecticut painter Ralph Earl and his second wife, Anne Whiteside of Norwich, England. On January 1, 1817, Earl arrived in Nashville to paint the portrait of General Andrew Jackson. Later that year, in Natchez, he met and married Jane Caffrey, Rachel Jackson's niece. She died the next year, but Earl moved into the Hermitage and into Jackson's circle.
