Hyatt Terraces Plaza Postcard

This is one of the postcards that I treasure most. It shows the Kaili Cafe-Restaurant of the Hyatt Terraces Plaza Baguio, one of the casualties of the July 16, 1990 earthquake.

The back of the postcard reads:

Kaili Cafe-Restaurant - located in the picturesque Atrium Plaza. Set amidst colorful handwoven tapestries and refreshing greenery.
Hyatt Terraces Baguio, the only 5-star resort hotel in the Philippines' summer capital, boasts 291 rooms and suites with private balconies, three specialty restaurants, two bars,an Igorot Park and discotheque.

Hyatt Terraces Plaza Postcard

The five-star Hyatt Terraces Plaza sustained the worst damage when its terraced front collapsed onto the hotel lobby area killing about 50 people.

NOTE: COLLAPSED DURING AN EARTHQUAKE
Block 150, Southdrive Road, Baguio City

Jaime Laya's wife, by the way, was a victim of the collapse of this hotel. You mention a book which he published on collecting Filipiniana.

Firstly, Mrs Laya was in the Nevada Hotel attending the United Nations ILO Conference. She was not in the Hyatt Terraces Baguio list of casualties. Secondly, there is no definitive plan yet for the property but there are discussions and studies being undertaken. Third, to correct the many misconceptions, we had 98 recorded official casualties in the hotel and the last body we unearthed was before Christmas on December 1990. Last, we urge everyone to continue to pray for everyone who passed, not just in the hotel, the other areas around - schools, offices, hospitals, EPZA etc, but also on the roads - Kennon, Naguilian Roads respectively and in the Marcos Highway because some of them were never retrieved and did not get a proper burial. Thank you.

First Mrs Laya died at the Nevada Hotel as this was the site of the United Nations ILO Conference. Second, there are many discussions and studies underway as to what the best use of this space will be and nothing is set in stone. Third, to clarify many misconceptions, the last body retrieved in the hotel was right before Christmas of 1990 and it brought the count to 98 casualties - family, friends, co-workers, residents, tenants. Last, we urge you to continue to pray for everyone who lost their lives that fateful day and to include those who were buried under the enormous landslides in the three main thoroughfares - Kennon and Naguilian Roads and in the Marcos Highway as well as those we lost in the schools, EPZA, other hotels, hostels, office buildings, homes, hospitals and everywhere else in the country because of these two earthquakes that had epicenters in Cabanatuan and in La Union. Thank you.
