Academy Building, Leiden University Postcard

The postcard shows the Academy Building at Rapenburg. The Academy Building is first building of Leiden University. Leiden University (Dutch: Universiteit Leiden), is the oldest university in the Netherlands. The university was founded in 1575 by Prince William of Orange.

Between 1425 and 1450 a cloister for Dominican nuns, or white nuns, was founded on the site of the present Academy Building. The cloister had a chapel. In 1507, this cloister chapel was replaced by a church: the present Academy Building. The church has two naves, a broad one on the Rapenburg side and a narrower one running parallel to it. In 1581, the site came into the hands of the University.
