Casa Manila Museum Postcard

Located inside Intramuros just opposite the San Agustin Church, Casa Manila is a reconstructed Spanish colonial mansion filled with period furniture and furnishings of Philippine, Chinese and European origins. The last time I visited the museum, I was informed by one of the guards that one of the paintings (he pointed it) in the sale is actually an original work of Juan Luna (complete with the LVNA signature).

The facade of Casa Manila was copied from a house (c. 1850) at Calle Jaboneros in San Nicolas. The walls of the ground floors are made of adobe stones (quarried from Bulacan). The uppermost floor, the living quarters, was made of wood.

Casa Gorordo was initially the home of the first Filipino Bishop of Cebu, Juan Gorordo (1910-32). Now restored, this museum serves as a display of a typical Filipino home of the 19th century. It is built of bituka tabliya (coral stone blocks) and roofed with tile. It has all the typical features of a bahay na bato (balay nga bato): wooden upper story, ventanillas, sliding capiz windows, etc.

The second story is furnished with antique furniture and has a collection of costumes, books and memorabilia from the past. Worth noting is the master’s bedroom which displays a collection of sayas. A room in the residence was outfitted to become a chapel, which displays a pasyon manuscript in Cebuano. Another item in the house collection is an antique nativity set. The garden has been landscaped and a new service building, inspired by 19th century architecture, has been built beside Casa Gorordo.

It showcases the religious relics, paintings, antique furniture and other household items. The museum also displays modern-day art exhibits, ceramics, pottery and other cultural activities. Also found here are small and life-size statues of saints and other figurines.

Ayala Museum Postcard

The Ayala Museum is an art and history museum located in Makati City. The museum was envisioned in the late-1950s by the artist Fernando M. Zobel de Ayala and was formally inaugurated in 1967. In 1974, the building moved to its present location, which was designed by National Artist for Architecture, Leandro V. Locsin. The building was known for its juxtaposed huge blocks. On September 28, 2004, a new building housing the Museum was formally inaugurated. The modern building was designed by the team led by Leandro V. Locsin's son, Leandro, Jr.

Jane Austen's House Museum Postcard

I am a big fan of Jane Austen. When I visited Bath last 2005, I was able to visit another Jane Austen museum and was able to buy several Austen items. Unfortunately I wasn't able to visit the museum in Hampshire, even though I stayed at nearby Dorset.

Jane Austen's House Museum Postcard

Jane Austen's House Museum is a small private museum in the village of Chawton near Alton in Hampshire. It occupies the 17th century house (informally known as Chawton Cottage) in which novelist Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life and where she wrote Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion. The Museum's collection includes eight music books owned by Jane Austen.

University of Santo Tomas Postcards

The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines (or simply the "UST") is a private Roman Catholic university run by the Order of Preachers in Manila. It was founded on April 28, 1611 by the Spanish Reverend Miguel de Benavides. It has the oldest extant university charter in the Philippines.

The Miguel de Benavides Monument is the centerpiece of a raised open rotunda at the edge of which stand several elephant statuary loaded with hanging ferns or flowering bougainvillea. At the foot of the monument, four lions "guard" each corner, each lion holding a shield with a coat of arms.

University of the Philippines, Diliman Postcards

The University of the Philippines, Diliman, or U.P. Diliman, was established in 1908 with three initial colleges, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Medicine and Surgery occupying buildings distributed along Padre Faura and R. Hidalgo in Manila.

Both postcards also show the Oblation which is the iconic symbol of the University of the Philippines, represented by a man with arms wide-stretched and face facing up, symbolizing selfless offering of one's self to his country. The Oblation was made by Professor Guillermo E. Tolentino with the help of Anastacio T. Caedo, his student apprentice.

University of San Carlos Postcard

The University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City is the oldest school in the Philippines. Founded by Spanish Jesuits in 1595, it is a Catholic institution of higher learning run by the Society of the Divine Word or SVD since 1935. The University was named after St. Charles Borromeo.

The university traces its origins to the founding of the school Colegio de San Ildefonso, founded by the Spanish Jesuits fathers Antonio Sedeno, Pedro Chirino and Antonio Pereira on August 1, 1595. It was closed in 1769 at the expulsion of the Jesuits. In 1783, the initiative of the Bishop Mateo Joaquin de Arevalo opened the Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos. The Second World War led to the interruption of the courses in 1941 because several buildings suffered various destruction. The Colegio de San Carlos was granted its university charter in 1948.

University of Baguio Postcard

The University of Baguio was founded by Dr. and Mrs. Fernando G. Bautista and was at first known as Baguio Technical and Commercial Institute, but people loved to call it Baguio Tech. After two decades of service, it was granted university status on August 7, 1969.

Saint Louis University, Baguio City Postcard

Saint Louis University, my Alma Mater, was founded in 1911 by Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae missionaries. SLU is the largest university in the Northern Philippines with, 20,750 as of November 17, 2007, the students coming all regions of the Philippines as well as overseas.

Its six hectare campus is located 250 kilometers north of Manila in Baguio City. The 30 building campus is located centrally in Baguio drawing an eclectic mix of cultures and nationalities.

The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) is the training school for future officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The Philippine Military Academy traces its history back to the Academia Militar which was established on October 25, 1898 at Malolos, Bulacan by General Emilio Aguinaldo.

During the U.S. occupation of the Philippines, an Officer's School of the Philippine Constabulary was established on February 17, 1905 within the walls of Intramuros in Manila located in Sta. Lucia Barracks. This school was relocated to Baguio on September 01, 1908 on the site known as Constabulary Hill later renamed Camp Henry T. Allen.

With the outbreak of World War II, training was disrupted at the PMA with Classes 1942 and 1943 being graduated prematurely and assigned to combat units in Bataan and other parts of the country.The PMA headquarters was temporarily relocated at Camp Murphy (now known as Camp Aguinaldo) and later at Alabang, while Camp Allen was being rehabilitated.

After the war, the Academy was reopened on May 05, 1947, at Camp Henry T. Allen. But due to its increasing need for wider grounds, it was soon moved to its present location at Fort Del Pilar, Loakan.

Boyd Law Building, U of Iowa Postcard

The postcard shows the Boyd Law Building of the University of Iowa, a major research university located on a 1,700-acre campus in Iowa City, Iowa. The University of Iowa College of Law is one of the professional graduate schools. Founded in 1865, it is the oldest law school in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. The law school was ranked as the 27th best law school in the United States in the 2009 U.S. News and World Report Top Law School rankings.

Milton Abbey School Postcard

The postcard shows the Milton Abbey House and Abbey Church, Milton Abbey House courtyard and the Abbot's Hall. I was able to visit the school and chapel when I visited the UK in 2005.

Milton Abbey in Dorset was a Benedictine foundation, but only part of the church now survives and is used as the Milton Abbey School chapel. The house is now the campus of an independent school. Milton Abbey School has 250 pupils, in six boarding houses called Athelstan, Bancks, Damer, Hambro, Middleton and Tregonwell. Age range from 13-18, with girls in 2005, accepted into the sixth form.

The postcard shows the Academy Building at Rapenburg. The Academy Building is first building of Leiden University. Leiden University (Dutch: Universiteit Leiden), is the oldest university in the Netherlands.The university was founded in 1575 by Prince William of Orange.

Between 1425 and 1450 a cloister for Dominican nuns, or white nuns, was founded on the site of the present Academy Building. The cloister had a chapel. In 1507, this cloister chapel was replaced by a church: the present Academy Building. The church has two naves, a broad one on the Rapenburg side and a narrower one running parallel to it. In 1581, the site came into the hands of the University.

Calle de la Escolta Postcards

Named "La Escolta" as this was the former quarters of the Royal Spanish Escort of the Governor-General of Manila. From the 19th century until the late sixties, it remained a fashionable district in Old Binondo selling only the finest silks from China, perfumes from Paris, crystals, jewelry, furniture and luxury goods from Spain and the rest of Europe.

Escolta is the main street of Binondo or New Manila, and is a well-paved thoroughfare, lighted by electricity. Large dry goods and other retail stores line its sides and throngs of pedestrians, marketwomen , carts and carriages add to its picturesqueness.

Silliman University Postcard

The postcard shows Silliman Hall which is a landmark of Dumaguete City and an example of American architecture found in many of the college's buildings. Silliman University was founded on August 28, 1901, making it the oldest American university in Asia. It was established by Protestant missionaries of the Presbyterian Church.

San Miguel Brewery Postcard

Under a royal grant from Spain, Enrique Barretto y de Ycaza opened La Fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel, Southeast Asia's first brewery, on September 29, 1890 at 6 Calzada de Malacañang in Manila, near the Palace of the Governor-General of the Philippines. He named the company after the section of Manila in which he lived and worked.

Old San Agustin Church Postcard

During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II, San Agustin Church was turned into a concentration camp for prisoners.The church itself survived the bombardment with only its roof destroyed. The adjacent monastery, however, was totally destroyed.

Parian Gate Postcard

The postcard shows the Parian Gate and the dome of one of the churches (no idea what church) inside the walled city. The Parian Gate, one of the 7 gates allowing access to Intramuros, was the only access that the Chinese traders were allowed to use. The Parian Gate directly faces Binondo, the Chinese section of Manila, and was the site of much commerce. The Chinese were forced to construct the walls of Intramuros.
