Carabaos vary in colour from light grey to slate grey. The horns are sickle-shaped or curve backward toward the neck. Mature male carabaos weigh 420–500 kg (930–1,100 lb), and females 400–425 kg (882–937 lb). Height at withers of the male ranges from 127 to 137 cm (50 to 54 in), and of the female from 124 to 129 cm (49 to 51 in).

Balangbang was originally a war dance performed during canao, a feast to celebrate either victory in war, a bountiful harvest, or a wedding. The dance shows a duel or combat of two warriors who later joins them. The hide and seek movements which follow the rhythm of the ganza (gong) dramatize the killing. The dancing crowd shields the warriors from clashing with each other. A closed dance formation represents the shielding and an open dance formation depicts the duel or fight scene.

The Harana is serenade tradition in rural areas of the Philippines in which young men may formally meet single lady visitors. The main instrument used for Harana is the guitar, played by the courter, although other string instruments such as the Ukulele and less frequently, the violin and trumpets are also used.

Traditionally, the suitor will visit the house of the girl he is trying to woo, and sing by her window until she comes out to either accept or deny him. The suitor may or may not be accompanied, but usually his companions will be playing a guitar or back up vocals as he sings. Ideally, the dalaga or young lass will come to the window and invite her suitor to come inside.
