FESTIVAL DETAILS:
Highlight: Via Crucis. A re-enactment of the suffering of Christ on his way to the Calvary where participants inflict suffering upon themselves by whipping their backs, carrying a wooden cross, and sometimes even crucifixion.
Etymology: Came from the word "Morion", meaning a mask that were used by Roman soldiers to conceal their identities.
When: Holy Monday until Easter Sunday (Holy Week)
Where: Marinduque

Moriones Festival re-enacts the story of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye and pierced the side of Jesus on the cross. The participants use morion masks and helmets, colorful Roman costumes, and brightly colored tunics to depict the Roman soldiers and Syrian mercenaries within the story of the Passion of the Christ.
